Hele 101 år etter at Stortinget vedtok en nasjonal transportplan, inkludert utbygging av jernbane til Kirkenes, pågår det utredning. Ikke bygging.
I fjor slo Jernbanedirektoratet fast at en Nord-Norge-bane mellom Fauske og Tromsø ville koste 200 milliarder kroner og ikke ville være samfunnsøkonomisk lønnsom. Nylig kom en analyse som sier at slik jernbane vil komme på 309 milliarder. Også den konkluderer med at satsingen blir ulønnsom.
Det er riktig å minne om at Norge kun har én jernbanestrekning som er lønnsom, og den er delvis svensk. Ofotbanen, som bringer malm fra Kiruna til Narvik, gir kroner i statskassa. De øvrige norske jernbanestrekningene er sterkt subsidierte av den samme kassa.
Forsvarets behov blir tydeligvis ikke lyttet til.
